Tomorrow's Innovation Comes From Today's Young Minds. Exploravision Awards 2010

Parent Resources

Congratulations on having a student who sees with ExploraVision! Through the process of putting together an ExploraVision entry, your child will apply knowledge learned across many disciplines, including the sciences, language arts, computer science, history and everyday life!

Completing an ExploraVision entry is a long and time-consuming process, and students need their parents' support while they are working on their projects. Please read through the entry information on the website and in the entry packet so you can understand how the competition works. Naturally, the degree of parental involvement will vary with a child's age, but here are some basic ways in which all parents can help:

  • Provide Guidance. You can't do your child's project for him or her, but you can be an invaluable resource in the process of putting a large project together. Talk about the project, and make sure your child understands what is expected of him or her. By asking questions, you can help him or her think through the process and break it down into manageable assignments.
  • Get Organized. Make sure your child has everything he or she needs to work on the project. Is there a set time each day your child works on homework or projects? Is there a good, well-lit place, such as the dining table or a desk, for him or her to work? You want to provide a homework area that is free of distractions (such as TV or family talking) but where your child can ask for help if he or she has a question.
  • Answer Questions. Be available, but don't hover. When it comes to homework and projects, try to answer your child's questions in a way that helps them discover the answer for themselves. For example, when responding to a question, you might ask what they think, how their teacher explained it or where they think you should look together to find the answer.
  • Offer Praise. Let your child know that you recognize the hard work and effort he or she and the team are putting into their project!
